Notes on the artwork, Boyer Chute
On Labor Day, 2016 I had the opportunity to paint on the outskirts of Omaha, NE. I returned to a site that I had found 20 years ago when I was a resident at The Bemis Center.
At that time I took many back-road drives along the Platte and Missouri Rivers, following odd junctures and finding places to sketch or paint. Many of the trials leave markers, of other intrepid folk,  few have been artists. I have stopped along these old water paths over time, to note changes. In 2010 I followed the game reserves, and routed myself to the Wildlife Reserve of Chute Boyer. I knew I wanted to get back there and work on site again.
The last day of summer, 2016, I made my way back. It was extremely hot, and buggy. It was difficult to focus, as I was covered from head to toe with protective gear, leaving room only for my eyes and my two gloved hands to operate the timely possibility of this painting. My oil paints melted and oozed as I built and reconsidered this gorgeous little paradise. Some of the dripping and over wrought paint still held up within the painting; some of it I feathered back by dry brushing. I reworked again in the constant hope of sustaining a sense of drama and structure in this work that seemed out-of control.
When I got back to my hosts in Dundee neighborhood (thank you Lorin Fergusson), I was able to re-work the painting and ultimately leave it to dry. I look forward to seeing the piece properly framed, courtesy of the Jean the framer, with the large array of works at the Bemis Center For Contemporary Art, on October 28, 2016. - Mary Ann Strandell
