Join us in celebrating Bemis Center’s 40th birthday at Omaha’s largest and most beloved celebration of contemporary art! More than 200 local, regional, and national artists participate in the Auction, choosing between 50-100% commission on the sale of their works. All other proceeds are reinvested into Bemis Center’s three core programs—Residency, Exhibitions, and Public Programs—that infuse our region with new art and ideas year-round through a regular schedule of free programming.
This year, with an expanded footprint to include outside food and beverage service, mobile bidding, and live music at LOW END, Bemis Center's music venue, we aim to maintain social distancing and bring our community together for a celebration that raises critical resources for Bemis and participating artists.

About Mary Ann Strandell, Breezeway View. At the beginning of lockdown 2020, my husband and I placed all our living and dining room furniture in storage to expand the studio use of our home. My “Breezeway View” is metaphor of that shift. It combines layers of small ink drawings (construction sites) for my commissioned projects, in between one of my painting-lenticulars of the porcelain flower series. The overall drawing is from my current large scale installation at Artport Kingston, which fixates on a domestic view of comfort, the ‘hygge’ of home. The retro TV screen reflects back our central relationship to screen-time amplified during the pandemic lockdown, and our curious flow back into society.

Mary Ann Strandell, "Transit Trail, Serape, Bird, Construction

Strandell writes, "This lenticular work, "Transit Trail Serape, Bird, Construction" is an algorithmic landscape layered with imagery painted at the Rio Borge, and the Southwestern Desert. It is also interspersed with song birds, waterfalls and NYC construction sites. The linear striations are inspired by serape blankets, and mapping systems. It is evocative of the dream-time spaces we collectively integrate into our amplified networks. Aspects of the work were hand-painted: birds, construction drawings, the sumi ink tree, and the very background paintings were all executed at desert sites in Nevada and New Mexico. Although my studio is in NYC, I travel a few times a year to southwest to camp and paint and organize gatherings with other intrepid artists. The areas where ancient petroglyphs can still be found hold high interest to locate and to stay in such areas for my outdoor studio camps. Thus, my work combines a complex relationship between experiences of trekking, on-site painting, studio painting and a digital conversation that involves optics and moving images."
