This exhibition explores the various emotional territories that have become a popular way of expressing who we are, and how we live, at any given moment. Zones, which began to be used in the mainstream press, became popular after WWII ("Occupation Zones") and the Korean War (Demilitarized Zone”) when it became necessary to demarcate areas along a boundary that were either shared by many groups or were summarily off-limits to any one group. It existed previously in areas of study such as Geography and Sports. This particular version refers to an athlete who is so immersed in the moment, that like an actor he ceases to be a person and becomes a cog in system of ultimate purpose.
Being "in the moment" is a quality of experience common to artists; beyond mere dedication to craft or idiosyncratic vision, it becomes necessary to project our immersion in subject matter, background context, and formal intentions so that the spectator can share in our degree of portent equally. The artwork will infect them, creating a state of contingency between its own qualities an aspect of their own experience. They may walk away bemused or challenged, but in the end they will have had their own moment; they will have been transported to a new zone. The strongest art does this well.

Exhibition: Cloud

Hinge, 48x36", oil on canvas, 2012-2013

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 18, 6-9PM
Deborah Colton Gallery
2445 North Boulevard
Houston, TX 77098

Deborah Colton Gallery is pleased to announce Cloud, a solo exhibition project of recent works by Mary Ann Strandell. Cloud showcases on central oil painting and a series of 3D lenticular prints. The artist's 2009  solo exhibition, Between Plane and Perception,  at Deborah Colton was featured in Paper CIty magazine by Catherine Anspon highlighting  Strandell's innovative use of lenticular media. Strandell's work was first seen at Deborah Colton Gallery in 2004 group exhibition Touch and Temperature: Art in the Age of Cybernetic Totalism, curated by New York artist Michael Rees.

Cloud exhibition explores permutations and experience of Cloud technology. In both an analogue and digital framework. These new works undertake an analytic/romantic relation to the iconic Apple store staircase. The oil painting Hinge, has ghostly elegance of this highly designed structured place.

Strandell's Lenticular prints have a futuristic Op element. In both Poly Waves and her architectural studies, the abstraction of these forms are activated by the viewer, allowing certain aspects of the work to move with the action of it's audience.  In the traditional medium
of oil, these works find their place in the larger terrain of our imagination.

Mary Ann Strandell writes, "My work reconfigures storied culture as we experience nature, architecture and technology.  The recent series examines the concept of cloud computing- figuratively, metaphorically, and it's larger implications as a repository of data. I'm interested in how we navigate the spaces of time and history through painting and with the hyperbolic media of lenticular prints.

Deborah Colton gallery is founded on being as innovative showcase for ongoing presentation and promotion of strong historical and visionary contemporary artists world-wide. Their diverse practices include painting, works on paper, sculpture, video, photography, performance and conceptual, future media installations. The gallery aspires to provide a forum through connecting Texas, national and international artists to garner positive change.
